Do I have to maintain a certain grade point average in order to maintain my WNY Prosperity Scholarship?
It is expected that undergraduate students will maintain a 3.0 GPA and full-time status (12 credit hours per semester) and graduate students will maintain a 3.5 GPA and continue in full-time status (typically 12 credit hours; 9 credit hours for TAs and GAs; and 1 credit hour for Master’s and PhD candidates).
Will the internship be arranged for me?
No, it is your responsibility to locate and secure an internship. If you need assistance finding an internship and if you are a School of Engineering and Applied Sciences student, visit the Engineering Career Institute and Co-Ops at 412 Bonner Hall, North Campus. Or, if you are a School of Management student, visit the School’s Career Resource Center at 308 Alfiero Center, North Campus. Or, if you are a Biomedical Sciences major, please contact Kelli Hickey, 127 Sherman Annex, South Campus. Additionally, UB’s Office of Career Services is an excellent resource for summer internships.
For my summer internship stipend, when should I expect to get paid?
For students receiving a full or partial summer internship stipend you will receive directly 2 payments per summer (first payment at the 6th week of summer session and the second payment at the end of 12th week of the summer session).
Your scholarship award for your summer internship tuition and fees (up to 3 credit hours) will be credited on your student account.
Will I receive a letter grade for my summer internship experience?
Summer internships are graded pass/fail.
How many credit hours should I register for my summer internship?
No more than 3 summer internship credit hours will be paid by the scholarship program.
Do I need to include letters of reference in my application?
No.

When and how will I learn about whether I will receive a scholarship?
For 2009-10 applicants, we anticipate notification in mid May via your UB email account.
How many WNY Prosperity Scholarships will be awarded?
Since scholarships are based on individual financial need, we anticipate awarding approximately 25 to 30 scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year.

How do I file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?

What is the recommended FAFSA filing date?
As soon as possible, but no later than May 1, 2009.
What is the definition of unmet financial need?
Unmet financial need is defined as the cost of attendance minus the expected family contribution and all additional scholarships or grants from other sources.
What if my summer internship involves more than the minimum 300 required hours?
Summer internship length may vary by degree program. However, maximum compensation is capped at 300 hours.
Which academic programs are eligible?
Students matriculated in any of the baccalaureate, masters, or PhD programs in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, or in the School of Management, or in the approved baccalaureate major of Biomedical Sciences in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences may be considered.
What are the counties that comprise the Western New York Region?
Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Orleans, Niagara, and Wyoming.
Is the summer internship a mandatory requirement of the scholarship program?
Yes, students must complete a summer internship to satisfy the requirements of the scholarship program.
Can I complete an additional internship in the fall or spring semester?
Yes, students may choose to complete an additional internship during the fall and/or spring semesters if compatible with their academic program. Please know that compensation (tuition, fees, and stipend) is only provided for summer internships.
After the 12-month scholarship ends, can I apply for a scholarship renewal?
To be eligible for scholarship renewal, students must continue to satisfy the grade point average for eligibility (undergraduate students 3.0 GPA and graduate students 3.5 GPA), have continued financial need, and have successfully completed the requirements for their summer internship. Adequate progress toward degree requirements will also be taken into consideration.
I am an international student. Am I eligible to apply?
This scholarship requires the determination of financial need, as determined by the US Department of Education. US citizenship or permanent residence is required for this financial need calculation.
